Common Community Areas in Boston

This map shows .25 mile buffer zones around community centers, pools at certain community centers, DCR pools, open recreational spaces in Boston, MBTA rapid transit/bus routes and stops, and Walkscores by zipcode. Some layers of data that are being shown are: blue-colored location points that represent the community centers, swimming symbols represent pools in the area of a community center, and the yellow stop points/dots represent the bus stops that are close by in the neighborhood where a community center is also located.

To create this map I explored so¬me ideas and thinking about what would be more appealing for young children and teens. The first thing that came to mind is community centers since that’s where most kids/young teens go after school, whether it’s for an afterschool or to just play basketball. I decided to search up community centers and anything else that would seem interesting or fun to go along with the community centers. People love going for a swim so I added a swimming pool layer to my map. I found all my data in ArcGIS Online. I did have to adjust the data on my map to make everything stand out and not look messy. I decided on how I was going to symbolize the information by finding the closest symbol that represents an individualized location that I have on my map.

I’m going to add my input and explain a little bit about the James W. Hennigan School’s community service to my neighborhood. I attended the James W. Hennigan, located in the Jamaica Plain area for elementary and middle school. They have a community center where there are 2-3 different types of afterschool programs. I really enjoyed going to the teen center after school. The Hennigan also had a pool and a gym which were open to those who had memberships and for those currently going to school there. There were open spaces in the back of the school with a baseball field and a small park with a basketball court. Now I’m going to explain the community spaces in my neighborhood. Madison Park Technical and Vocational High School is where I’m currently attending. There’s a pool, a gym, a community center, and different afterschool programs. Behind the school there is a track field, a soccer field, and a football field. There is a basketball court, a seating area and a park. Across the street from the park that’s behind Madison there is a community center which you also need a membership for. Inside that community center there’s a gaming room, a gym and more. I recommend checking out these places because they can benefit a lot of people by keeping them occupied.

I hope a viewer looking at my map will take away interest and some decent information because this map is focused on an important topic for the young ones, which I hope the viewer cares about.
