An Interview with Kiana Harriel, Experiential Learning & Programs Educator We’re excited to introduce Kiana Harriel to the LMEC team as our new Experiential Learning & Programs Educator in the expanding Education department! Kiana joined us this June, having recently finished her Masters in Teaching Social Studies from Brown University. We sat down with Kiana to learn more about her earliest memory of maps, her past teaching experience, and her (current) favorite map in the collection. Last Call for Fall Interns! Applications are almost closed for our fall cohort of college interns. Our internship program trains the next generation of professionals in topics related to geospatial technology, public humanities, and librarianship. Interns will work onsite in the Center’s offices at the Central Library for 6-10 hours per week from mid-September 2024 through mid-December 2024, focused on Geohumanities & GIS. LMEC Spotlight: Collections Research Guides Did you know the Leventhal Center has online research guides to help you access information and sources in our collections? With guides on topics ranging from Boston’s urban planning to Topographic Maps from the U.S. Geological Survey, you’re sure to find helpful tools that make these cartographic collections navigable and accessible. Whether looking to do some research or quickly learn about a new subject, these library research guides are a great starting point for learning more from our collections. A Great Time of Year to “Walk to the Sea” Visiting Boston this summer? Or maybe you want to explore a different side to the city you call home? Spend some time exploring past and present Boston using our free Walk to the Sea self-guided tour. A one-mile walk from Beacon Hill to Long Wharf, Walk to the Sea invites you into the history of a city whose destiny and fortunes have long been shaped by the relationship between land and water. Use the companion digital guide and follow along with the physical monuments along the route to experience centuries of history condensed into just a few city blocks. FTV Highlights: Revolution and Independence! As we enter the 250th year since America’s first fight to gain independence, we have an opportunity to reflect on our nation’s founding and on similar historic events of the past. This past week, we selected maps that showcased peoples, regions, and nations where revolutionary activity led to movements for freedom and independence. |
