Walker Lith. & Pub. Co, Atlas of the towns of Braintree and Weymouth, Norfolk County, Massachusetts (1909) |
Help Us Add Weymouth, Braintree, and Quincy to Atlascope Atlascope continues to grow across Massachusetts, adding geographical coverage and making it possible to explore the history of ever more cities and towns. Right now we’re working to expand coverage to Weymouth, Braintree, and Quincy. We need help from you and your communities to make this happen! Each atlas requires a complicated, labor-intensive process to transform it into an easy-to-use digital map layer. Community support is crucial to advance this work. Right now, we’re almost halfway towards our goal of bringing the first batch of Weymouth, Braintree, and Quincy atlases into Atlascope. There are dozens more cities and towns that we hope to add in the future. To support a fundraising campaign for your own location, learn more and reach out. Routes Ahead of Us: Dan Rosengard · March 26, 6 pm In our Spring 2024 conversation series Routes Ahead of Us, we take the themes of our current exhibition Getting Around Town: Mapping Four Centuries of Boston in Transit and connect the history of Boston’s transit system with questions about how to build a better, more equitable urban mobility system in the future. These informal presentations feature discussions with transit and mobility experts, free drinks and refreshments at the Boston Public Library’s Newsfeed Café, and tours of Getting Around Town following the conclusion of the program. In the second event of this series, we’ll be speaking to Dan Rosengard, the Executive Director of Transportation for Boston Public Schools. In this role, he is focused on ensuring the delivery of safe, reliable, on-time, and cost-effective yellow bus transportation to and from school for over 22,000 Boston students on a daily basis. Virtual Guided Tour of _Getting Around Town_ with Guest Curator Steven Beaucher Earlier this month, LMEC hosted Steven Beaucher, the guest curator of Getting Around Town, for a live walkthrough and commentary of the exhibition. During the live tour, Steven spoke about the origins of public transit in Boston, the swift move from horse-drawn omnibuses to electrical trolleys, and the creation of the MBTA’s iconic “T” symbol. Educator Positions Open We’re adding two new members to our Education team—could one of them be you? We’re hiring for two new positions: an Experiential Learning & Programs Educator and a Learning Resource Specialist. These new positions will reach students, educators, and members of the public through map-based educational programs of all kinds. We encourage applicants who can bring fresh perspectives and innovative visions coupled with the skills to get stuff done. For full consideration, apply by Monday, March 25, 2024 at 12:00 pm ET. An Interview with Satoh Feng: Visitor Services and Exhibition Assistant We’re excited to introduce Satoh Feng to the LMEC community as our Visitor Services and Exhibition Assistant! Satoh joined us in January a Northeastern Co-op student and is currently studying towards a BA in Design. We sat down with Satoh to learn more about his interests, current work at the Center, and his favorite part of the gallery. Featured Visitor Maps from Getting Around Town - Steven Beaucher If you’ve made an in-person visit to Getting Around Town, you may have seen our invitation to make your own maps of Boston or other parts of the world. We’ve gotten to see how creative and detailed our patrons have been and we’d like to show off some of our staff favorite maps from the exhibition! These featured maps were chosen by Steven Beaucher, guest curator of Getting Around Town. Map of getting around Boston by Sarah “Hello From Tucson!” by S. Brandt |
