Virtual tonight: Benjamin L. Carp on Urban Geographies of the American Revolution · May 30, 7:00pm ET How did Boston’s waterfront geography become a flashpoint for rebellion? How did public gathering spaces in Philadelphia create the context for democratic ideas about mass politics? Can maps help us learn whether New York City was deliberately set on fire in 1776? Join us May 30 at 7:00pm with scholar Benjamin L. Carp to learn about these and other insights from a historical geographic approach to the Revolutionary period. A War of Ideology: Reading the Illustrierte Karte through the Lens of Geopolitics “However, a closer look provides insight into growing American geopolitical influence, U.S. interests in defining German perceptions of America, and even some insights into how the U.S. state imagined its own regionally distinct cultural and economic geographies,” writes geospatial intern Joshua Aldwinckle-Povey in a recent article on this 1950s German-language map of the U.S. Now Virtual: Blake Gumprecht on North to Boston · June 7, 6:00pm ET Join us on Thursday, June 7 at 6:00pm with Blake Gumprecht for a virtual talk on his new book, North to Boston: Life Histories from the Black Great Migration in New England. North to Boston traces the history of the Great Migration, when tens of thousands of Black people moved to Boston from the South, and explores its impacts in greater depth through the lives of ten individuals, each the subject of one chapter. Note that this program has been changed from an in-person to a virtual format. Double the Support · Double the Impact This spring, we’ve doubled the scope and scale of our work; now, you too can help us double the impact by unlocking $10,000 in matching gift funds from a generous donor. Any amount you give before June 30 will count 2X as much towards our mission - can you contribute today to help support our fall transit exhibition and ensure our work stays strong? In Person: Black Boston Stories: Taking Care · June 15, 6:00pm ET When you think of locations that are important for taking care of residents in Boston’s Black communities, what place or places come to mind? On Thursday, June 15 at 6PM at the Grove Hall Branch Library, Apolo Cátala, OASIS on Ballou; Reggie Jean, Haley House; and Jo-Anna Rorie, Neighborhood Birth Center will reflect on taking care in and of Boston’s Black communities and lead a wider conversation with participants. Food will be served starting at 5:30PM. Applications Open: Teen Artist × Exhibition Contributor In May 2024, the Leventhal Center will open the Heaven and Earth exhibition, which revolves around two large Chinese Qing dynasty maps. One represents places on Earth (a terrestrial map) and the other the objects in the sky (a celestial map). We are looking for several young artists from the Boston Public Schools to respond to these maps in any media, with a few guiding conditions from our K-12 team. Materials will be provided. Commitment of 34 hours minimum over 8 weeks, starting July 6. $500 upon completion of work. |
